What was the purpose of the Homestead Act of 1862?

A

The Homestead Act opened up settlement in the west. It allowed any Americans to put in a claim for up to 160 acres of federal land. It also provided the head of the family could qualify for a grant of 160 acres of public land by paying a small fee and living on the land for 5 years. It’s purpose was for farmers to own land in the western part of the United States.

A

It led to people starting to mine and it drove people to where it was being found. So many people came that it led to them starting to have town and communities. Then when no more gold or silver was being found, they would move to another place.
