Chapter 3- Electromagnetic Waves Vocabulary Flashcards
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The complete range of electromagnetic waves placed in order of increasing frequency. Is made up of radio waves, microwaves, infrared rays, visible light, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, and gamma rays.
Electromagnetic Waves
An electromagnetic wave is aq transverse wave that is made up of vibrating electric and magnetic fields that move through space or some medium at the speed of light.
Radio Waves
Electromagnetic waves with the longest wavelengths are the lowes frequencies.
Microwaves
Have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than radio waves.
Radar
A system that uses reflected radio waves to detect objects and measure their distance and speed.
Infrared Rays
Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths shorter than those of microwaves, and higher frequencies. Carry more energy than microwaves and are often called heat rays.
Thermogram
An image that shows regions of different temperatures in different temperatures in different colors.
Visible Light
Electromagnetic waves that you can see.
Ultraviolet Rays
Electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than visible light. Carry more energy than visible light and can damage or kill living cells.
X-Rays
Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths just shorter than those of ultraviolet rays.
Gamma Rays
Electromagnetic waves with the shortest wavelengths and higher frequencies. Has the greatest amount of energy and are the most penetrating.
