Chapter 3: Dynamics Flashcards
What is meant by momentum?
The momentum of a body is the product of its mass and its velocity
What is Newton’s 1st law?
Every body remains in its state of rest or uniform motion along a straight line unless it is compelled to act otherwise by a resultant force.
What is Newton’s 2nd law?
The rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the force being applied and takes place in the direction of the force
What is meant by force?
Force is defined as the rate of change of momentum
What is meant by the Newton?
The Newton is the force which when acted on a body of mass 1kg produces an acceleration of 1ms-2
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
It states that if body A exerts a force on body B, then body B exerts an equal but opposite force of the same nature on body A
What is the principle of conservation of linear momentum?
PCLM states that for a closed system, the total momentum remains constant.
It states that if no external force acts on a system of interacting bodies, the total momentum remains constant.
What is the difference between an elastic collision and an inelastic collision?
An elastic collision is one during which both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved whereas during an inelastic collision, momentum is conserved but kinetic energy is not conserved
What is meant by a completely elastic collision?
A completely elastic collision is one during which the 2 bodies stick together after the collision and move with a common speed or before the interaction, the 2 bodies were together.
