Chapter 3 - Digital Storage Mediums Flashcards
Name the three main types of digital storage.
- Optical media
- Magnetic Media
- Flash and solid state media
Why is optical media called so?
because the data is read off the disks by an optical laser beam.
How do original CDs work?
CDs are pressed to create bumps and flats that can be read as 1s and 0s.
What does CD-R allow that CD doesn’t?
Allow the user to burn your own data to the disk.
How does CD-R work?
CD-R uses the heat of a laser to deform a dye layer. The difference between the deformed dye and original dye can be read as 1s and 0s.
What does CD-RW stand for?
Re- writable CD
What does CD-RW allow?
Allow the user to erase and rewrite the disk.
How does CD-RW work?
Uses a substance that has 2 different states, crystalline and amorphous. The laser is used to change between the two states.
What does DVD stand for?
Digital Versatile Disk
What is the difference between DVD and CD?
DVD laser has a smaller wavelength, therefore more storage capacity.
What does HD-DVD stand for?
High definition DVD
How much storage does DVD offer?
4.7 GB per layer.
How much storage does HD-DVD offer?
15GB per layer.
How much storage does Blu-ray offer per layer?
25GB per layer.
What is flash memory?
Flash memory is an electronic non-volatile computer storage device that can be electronically erased and reprogrammed.
