Chapter 3 Data Transport and Cabling Flashcards
A number indicating a protocol’s reliability. Lower #’s are a higher priority.
(AD) Administrative Distance
A table of MAC addresses and IP addresses - includes static and dynamic.
ARP table / ARP cache
A group of networking from the same organization, maybe same domain.
(AS) Autonomous System
A 32-bit number similar to IP addresses for organizations.
(ASN) Autonomous System Number
“The protocol of the internet” - scouts cross-country, travels through routers over TCP, determines paths on many factors.
(BGP) Border gateway protocol
The group of nodes that a broadcast reaches.
Broadcast domain
A character string over TCP to verify the connection.
checksum
The time it takes to find the best path
Convergence
Determines the best path based on distance.
Distance-vector routing protocol
Protocols used by exterior and border routers to distribute data outside of the autonomous system.
(EGP) Exterior Gateway Protocols
A measure of a sequence of packets
flow
A routing protocol that exhibits both link-state and distance-vector routing protocols.
Hybrid routing protocol
Protocol that manages multicasting.
IGMP
Protocols used by interior routers and border routers.
IGP
IGP best-path algorithm, used by interior routers only.
IS-IS
A number used in the first SYN message of a three-way-handshake that is calculated by a clock-based algorithm.
ISN
Protocols used to communicate beyond neighboring routers to determine the best route.
Link-state routing protocols.
An older NetBIOS Windows protocol, alternative to TCP/IP
nbtstat
Command used to give a list of interfaces on a device.
netstat
Command that uses ping and tracert to troubleshoot network issues.
pathping
A routing information protocol that only counts the hops.
RIP
The routing information is adapted to another routing protocol’s specifications.
Route redistribution
Cost for a more effective route.
Routing cost
When a message gets stuck in a loop between limited routers and finds no destination.
Routing loop
The properties of a route.
Routing metric
A chronological number that TCP attaches to segments so that the destination host can reorder the segments, if necessary.
Sequence number
The SYN/ACK synchronized confirmation messages over TCP to establish a connection.
Three-way-handshake
Maximum duration of an IPv4 packet on a network before it is discarded, also maximum forwards or hops.
TTL
A protocol that notifies the sender that something has gone wrong in the transmission process and that packets were not delivered.
ICMP (Internet Control Messaging Protocol)
An application layer protocol used to synchronize the clocks of computers on a network.
NTP (Network Time Protocol)
