Chapter 3: Climates of the Earth: Section 1: Earth-Sun Relationship Flashcards
Weather
The condition of the atmosphere in one place during a limited period of time.
Climate
The term for the weather patterns that an area typically experiences over a long period of time.
Axis
An imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole through the Earth’s center.
Temperature
The measure of how hot or cold a place is.
Revolution
Earth’s trip around the sun.
Equinox
Around March 21, the sun’s rays fall directly on the Equator. It’s called the equinox because daylight and nighttime hours are equal.
Soltice
Marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere because it’s the longest day of sunlight.
Greenhouse Effect
It traps the sun’s warmth for growing plants even in cold weather.
Global Warming
Believed to be caused in part by human activities such as the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas. As more fossils are burned, greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere and trap more heat.
