Chapter 3 Chemical/physical Changes Flashcards
What are the two characteristics of matter
Has mass
Takes up space
What are the three states of matter
Solid, liquid, gas
What state of matter is rigid and has a fixed shape and volume
Solid
What state of matter has a definite volume and conforms to the shape of the container in which it is held
Liquid
Which state of matter has no fixed shape or volume and takes the shape and volume of its container
Gas
Properties that can be seen or observed
Physical properties
A substances ability to form a new substance or characteristic that describe the behavior of the matter
Chemical properties
A change in an object but does not change the substance or the molecular makeup
Physical change
The changing of one substance to another
Aka reactions
Chemical change
What is the state of matter based off of
The strength of the particles
A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical methods. It only contains one type of atoms
Elements
A combination of elements that can be broken into elements by chemical methods
Compounds
A substance that always has the same composition
Pure substance
Has two or more substances and a varying composition
Mixture
A mixture that is the same throughout
Homogeneous mixture
