Chapter 3 ( Chemical Equations + Basics ) Flashcards
Why do metal ions for cations?
Metals have a sea of delocalised electrons which they need to lose in order to achieve stable noble gas configuration. Hence when they have more protons then electrons their charge is positive as proton is positive 1 charge
Why non metal ions form anions?
non metals need electrons from metals to achieve stable noble gas configuration -> anions = electrons > protons
What are polyatomic ions?
made of one or more atoms covalently bonded together and their overall charge is their overall valency
What are molecules?
molecules refer to two or more atoms chemically combined to form the smallest unit of a substance that retains the substance’s chemical properties and composition
Speciality of ionic equations?
involve at least one aqueous reactant (on LHS) that is usually an ionic compound
show the ions that take part in the reaction
What does the arrow in equation show?
That the reactants on LHS have COMPLETELY REACTED into the proudests on RHS
What charge does iron (III) have and how do you know?
The stupid Roman numerals give it away, charge of 3+ ( positive because metal )
