Chapter 3 (Case study) Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of case study research
A
To explores a real-life, contemporary bounded system (a case) or multiple bounded systems (cases) over time, through detailed, in-depth data collection involving multiple sources of information (e.g observations, interviews, documents, etc), and reports a case description and case themes.

Q
Features of case study
A
- Case study research begins with the identification of a specific case that will be described and analysed.
- Key to case identification is that it is bounded – it can be defined or described within certain parameters.
- The intent of conducting the case study – determines the procedures for the particular type.
- In-depth understanding of the case.
- How to approach the data analysis in case study will differ.
- Case themes
- Case study often ends with conclusions formed by the researcher about the overall meaning delivering from the case(s)

Q
Types of case study
A
- instrumental case study
- Collective case study / multiple case study
- intrinsic case study
4
Q
Steps for conducting a case study
A
- Determine if a case study is appropriate for studying the research problem.
- Identify the intent of study and select the case (or cases) as well as case sampling procedures.
- Develop procedures for conducting the extensive data collection drawing on multiple data sources.
- Specify the analysis approach on which the case description integrates analysis themes and contextual information.
- Report the case study and lessons learned using case assertions.
