Chapter 3 - Accelerated Motion Flashcards
How to determine whether the object is speeding up or slowing down?
Both the direction of the object’s velocity and it’s direction of acceleration is needed. When an object’s acceleration is in the same direction as it’s velocity, the speed increases. When they are in opposite directions, the speed decreases.
Define acceleration.
The rate at which an object’s velocity changes.
What is a velocity-time graph/v-t graph?
On a v-t graph, velocity is plotted on the vertical axis and time is plotted on the horizontal axis.
If the graph is a straight line, then this means the car sped up at a __________________.
Constant rate.
When the velocity of an object changes at a constant rate, it had a ________ ____________.
Constant acceleration.
The slopes of the graph are zero. Thus the acceleration is ____.
Zero.
Differentiate between average acceleration and instantaneous acceleration.
Avg: change in velocity during some measurable time interval divided by that time.
Inst: change in an object’s velocity at an instant of time.
A curved line on a v-t graph indicates that the acceleration is ________.
Changing.
For an object with constant acceleration, the p-t graph is a _________.
Parabola.
For an object with constant acceleration, the v-t graph is a _________ _____.
Straight line.
