chapter 3 Flashcards
plasma membrane structure
2 layers of phospholipids embedded with INTEGRAL and PERIPHERAL proteins. The phospholipid tails are hydrophobic
plasma membrane function
provides a boundary around the cell; acts as a place for chemical reactions to occur. It is selectively permeable.
nucleus structure
the dna is surrounded and protected by a nuclear envelope (a membrane). the nuclear envelope has pores.
nucleus function
the nucleus is part of a cell that houses the dna
cytoplasm structure
the semi-fluid medium (jelly-like substance)
cytoplasm function
hold the organelles in place inside a cell; provide a site for chemical reactions to occur.
organelles
small organs found within a cell. their job is to perform a specific function for the cell.
ribosomes
make proteins
rough er
synthesizes proteins; the surface is studded with ribosomes
smooth er
synthesizes lipids; it lacks ribosome son its surface
