Chapter 3 Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain and Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System
Nerve cells that send messages between the central nervous system and other parts of the body
Neurons
nerve cells that run through our entire bodies and communicate with each other
cell body
produces energy that fuels the neuron’s activities
Dendrites
receives information from other neurons and passes the message through the cell body
axon
transmits messages away from the cell body
myelin
fatty substance that insulates and protects the axons; speeds up transmission
axon terminals
small fibers at the end of the axon
synapse
junction between the axon terminals of one neuron and the dendrites of another one
sensory neurons
nerve cells that carry information received by senses to the CNS
motor neurons
nerve cells that carry information received from the CNS to muscles and glands
Neurotransmitters
chemicals that are stored in axon terminals; help send messages across the synapse
Acetylcholine
neurotransmitter involved in control of muscles, learning and memory
Dopamine
neurotransmitter involved in motor behavior
Too little Dopamine
Parkinson’s disease
Too much Dopamine
Schizophrenia
Noradrenaline
Neurotransmitter involved in preparing the body for action
