Why Distance Education and Nursing
Decreased distance for travel
Less time, associated costs with travel
Decreased geographic barriers
Need for more flexible learning environment due to obligations, financial constraints
scope of distance education
Online degree programs in nursing have multiplied rapidly in recent years, and the new reality is that distance education for nursing now exists for associate through doctorate-level degrees
financial aid of distance education
the “50% rule,” prevented students at colleges providing more than 50% of their courses online from obtaining certain kinds of federal loans, specifically the financial assistance authorized through of Title IV of the Health Education Act, as amended (HEA). On February 8, 2006, the Higher Education Reconciliation Act (HERA) eliminated this rule. In recognition of the status of online education, Congress removed distance learning from the “correspondence school” category and, in doing so, equated online education more with traditional forms of education.
Student Needs in Distance Learning
Communication, feedback
Interactivity, sense of community
Adequate direction, empowerment to carry out tasks required by course
Courses emphasizing adult learning theory
Clarification of how to engage with instructor, material, other students
Learner centered, learner focused
Virtual student needs
Can nursing (a practice- and competency-based profession) be taught online?
Adequate clinical experience
Adequate opportunity for skill development
Can students be socialized to professional role?
Can students achieve desired learning outcomes?
How do faculty roles differ from traditional settings?
How can quality be assured?
