The Stranger Test
Ask yourself can anyone not familiar with the student read your description of the student’s behavior and interpret it in the same way as you do.
The So What? Test
Used to decide whether or not to fix a student’s behavior when that behavior is a violation of a questionable rule. Ask yourself so what? to determine if the behavior is maladaptive.
Maladaptive Behavior
Any behavior that interferes with the physical, emotional, social, or academic well-being of a student or of any other person.
Target Behavior
Desirable behavior. What we want to replace the maladaptive behavior.
The Dead Man’s Test
Used to prevent the weakening or eliminating maladaptive behavior without replacing it.
Is the target behavior something that can be observed in a dead man? If Yes-It doesn’t pass the test and can’t be used as a replacement behavior. If No- The target behavior passes and is a replacement behavior.
Fair Pair
An appropriate replacement behavior should also be incompatible with, or should at least compete with, the maladaptive behavior. It is only fair to weaken a student’s maladaptive behavior if we strengthen an adaptive behavior in its place. EX: Hits peers—-Interacts with peers without hitting
Performance Objective
What the student will do to demonstrate that the change has occurred. Tells us when we should terminate our intervention.
