Chapter 3 Flashcards
A protein that speeds chemical reactions in cells without being changed itself
Enzymes
Class of compounds made from elements other than carbon; water
Inorganic compound
The movement of molecules from areas of greater concentration to lower concentration
Diffusion
Conditions in which molecules of a substance are spread evenly throughout a space
Equilibrium
The diffusion of water through a cell membrane
Osmosis
Movement of material across the cell membrane without the use of energy
Passive transport
Movement of material through a cell membrane with the use of energy
Active transport
A process by which cells transport a large body such as a large protein molecule through a cell membrane into the cytoplasm
Endocytosis
A process by which a cell moves large molecules out through the cell membrane
Exocytosis
All of the chemical activities of an organism that enables it live grow and reproduce
Metabolism
Green plants that make their own food by photosynthesis
Producer
Organisms that can’t make their own food; eat producer or other consumer
Consumer
A form of respiration that converts energy from glucose when the supply of oxygen is not sufficient; yeast and some bacteria use alcohol fermentation to release energy
Fermentation
The process by which organisms break down food to release emerged
Respiration
Class of compounds in living organisms; carbohydrates, lipids, proteins
Organic compounds
