the integumentary sstem
dermis has 2 layers
papillary layer and the reticular layer
epidermis first three layers are comprised of
keratinocytes

stratum basale, spinosdum, granulosum, lucidum, corneum
stratum basale made of
single layer of cuboidal to low columnar
stratum basale has three types of cells
keratinocyes, melanocytes, tactile cells
keratinocytes in basale divide to strengthen. they make
keratin. which strengthens epidermis
Melanocytes
Scattered among keratinocytes in stratum basale
* Produce and store pigment (melanin) in response to
ultraviolet light
* Transfer pigment granules (melanosomes) into
keratinocytes
* Shield nuclear DNA from UV radiation
