How does temperature affect wavelength?
As every object above 0 Kelvin emits thermal radiation as a result of the kinetic energy of its atoms.
This radiation occurs across the whole electromagnetic spectrum but its most INTENSE at a particular wavelenght which is the PEAK WAVELENGTH
What is a blackbody?
An object that:
1. Absorbs all incoming radiation
2. Does not reflect or transmit any radiation
3. Emits the max amount of thermal radiation possible
The thermal energy that is emitted by an object as radiation is proportional to…?
The area under the intensity wavelength graph for that objects temperature.
What happens when the temperature of an object increases?
The total energy across the spectrum radiated per second by the object is increased
the proportion of radiation that is short wavelength increases
Do hotter objects emit more or less energy than cooler objects?
Hotter objects (shorter wavelengths) emit a greater proportion of radiation than cooler objects (longer wavelengths)
Difference between weather and climate?
Weather refers to the local atmospheric conditions (wind, rain) that occur over a SHORT period of time (min, hrs, days)
Whereas climate refers to a regions or global average of atmospheric conditions such as humidity, over a LONG period of time
