Chapter 3 Flashcards
German rearmament
Hitler began rebuilding the German military in 1931. This broke the treaty of Versailles but as the UK and France did not attempt to enforce it, it was successful.
Anglo-German Naval Agreement
Germany and the UK signed an agreement setting the size of the German Navy at about 35% of the size of the British navy. This again violated Versailles and was done without French agreement.
Anschluss
German annexation of Austria in 1938. Hitler claimed to be re-unifiying the German people into one country along the lines of self-determination.
Rhineland reoccupation
Hitler sent troops into the demilitarized zone of the Rhineland. This region borders France and Germany was not allowed to send troops into it under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. The French military was much more powerful and the German army had orders to withdraw if it were opposed.

Passed in the US in response to Spanish civil war. It made it illegal for Americans to sell weapons to either side in a war, or to fight in it.
Isolationism
The idea that the US should stay out of other countries conflicts and focus on affairs at home. Very popular after WWI. The Neutrality Acts were a major set of laws in favor of this. Later people like Charles Lindbergh supported the America First committee as well.
Dollfuss
Pro-Mussolini chancellor of Austria. Assassiated by Austrian Nazis, he was replaced by Schuschnigg, another pro-Italy right wing leader after Mussolini threatened war if Hitler tried to expand his influence in Austria.
