John F. Kennedy background
son of wealthy Joseph P Boston business owner and former Great Britain ambassador. Graduated from Harvard and served on the US House of representatives. War hero who saved crew of his PT boat.
Kennedys health
gravelly ill and his wartime injuries caused him daily agony. had to wear a back brace.
Peace corps
recruited yound people to undertake humanitarian projects in asia, Africa and latin america.

The Bay of the Pigs
CIA trained a group of cuban exiles to stop castro. landed in bay of pigs on Cuban coast and were supposed to inspire rebellion. Was a disaster.
Cuban Missile Crisis
soviets and castro had ballistic missile sites in Cuba. Kennedy demanded the soviet premier to remove missiles and have a naval quarantine. Using the word blockade would have been considered an act of war. Kennedy promised to not invade Cuba and remove U.S. warheads from Turkey.
Kennedy assassination
Nov 21, 1963 he was shot. warren commission said not conspiracy.
Lyndon Johnson
Took over for Kennedy, his social programs, investments in education, support for the arts, and commitment to civil rights changed the lives of countless people. His vision was called the great society.
Higher Education Act
provided scholarships and low interest loans to poor, and increased federal funding for colleges, created corps of teachers to serve schools in impoverished areas.
Economic Opportunity Act
assisted poor to find jobs.
Head start program
prepare low-income children for elementary school.
Social Security Act
created medicare to pay for medical expenses of those over 65. then Medicaid for the poor.
Civil Rights Act
banned public discrimination, sought to aid schools in desegregation, and didn’t allow funding to programs that allowed racial segregation. Equal employment opportunity.
Bloody Sunday
March 7, 1965 African Americans marched to Selma, Alabama to protect right to vote. After crossing Edmund Pettus Bridge state police stopped them with batons and tear gas.
