Infection
Invasion of a susceptible host by pathogens or microorganisms.
Colonization
Presence and growth of microorganisms within a host without tissue invasion or damage.
Communicable disease
Infectious process transmitted from one person to another.
Incubation period
Interval between entrance and appearance of first symptoms.
Prodromal stage
Interval for onset of nonspecific to specific signs and symptoms.
Illness stage
Patient manifest signs and symptoms specific to type of infection.
Convalescence stage
When acute symptoms of infection disappear.
Superinfection
Develops when broad spectrum antibiotics eliminate wide range of normal flora.
Serous
Clear like plasma.
Sanguineous
Contains RBCs.
Purulent
Contains WBC and bacteria.
Iatrogenic
From a procedure.
Exogenous
From microorganisms outside the individual.
Endogenous
When the patients flora becomes altered and an overgrowth results.
Disinfection
Process that eliminates many of all microorganisms, with the exception of bacterial spores.
