Major components of the Male Reproductive System
Testes, system of ducts (epididymis, ductus deferens, ejaculatory ducts, urethra), accessory male genital glands (seminal glands, prostate, bulbourethral glands), scrotum, penis
Where are sperm produced
seminiferous tubules
Two types of cells in the seminiferous tubules
Spermatogonia (sperm-forming cells), nurse cells (support spermatogenesis)
Parts of a sperm
Head, tail (Neck, middle piece, principle piece, end piece)
Purpose of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
Stimulates gonadotrophic cells in the anterior pituitary to increase their secretion of the two gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
Structure of the penis
body, glans penis, and a root
Organs of the female genital system
Ovaries, uterine tubes, oviducts, uterus, vagina, external organs (vulva)
What do the ovaries produce
Gametes (secondary oocytes), hormones (progesterone, estrogen, inhibin, relaxin)
Histology of the ovaries
Ovarian mesothelium, tunica albuginea, ovarian cortex, ovarian medulla, ovarian follicles, tertiary ovarian follicle, corpus luteum
