CHAPTER 28: Infection Prevention & Control Flashcards
Aerobic
Bacteria that require oxygen to survive and for multiplication significant enough to cause disease. EX: Staphylococcus aureus.
Anaerobic
Bacteria that thrives without O2, such as bacteria that cause infectiosn in the pleural cavity, or a joint, or the deep sinus tract. EX: Bacteroides fragilis (causes infection if displaced from colon into the bloodstream)
Asepsis
Bactericidal
Bacteriostasis
Cold temperatures preventing growth and reproduction of bacteria.
Broad Spectrum Antibiotics
Colonization
The presence and growth of microorganisms within a host but without tissue invasion or damage.
Communicable Disease
When an infectious disease can be transmitted directly from one person to another. These can be either symptomatic or asymptomatic.

Disinfection
Endogenous Infection
Exogenous Infection
Hand Hygiene
