acute phase
the acute phase of the rape-trauma syndrome occurs immediately after the assault and may last for 2 to 3 weeks.
there is a great deal of disorganization in the person’s lifestyle, and somatic symptoms are common
the most common initial reactions are shock, numbness and disbelief.

it includes physical attempts and verbal threats of rape
controlled style of coping
ambiguous reactions:
- confusion, incoherence, disorientation
- masked facies
- calm, subdued appearance
- shock, numbness, confusion, disbelief
- distractibility, difficulty making decisions
expressed style of coping
overt behaviors:
- crying, sobbing
- smiling, laughing, joking
- restlessness, agitation, hysteria
- volatility, anger
- confusion, incoherence, disorientation
- tenseness
long-term reorganization phase
it occurs 2 or more weeks after the rape
nurses who initially care for survivors can help them anticipate and prepare for the reactions they are likely to experience which include:
- intrusive thoughts
- increased activity
- increased emotional lability
fear and phobias develop as a defensive reaction to the rape
rape
it is one type of sexual assault. Rape is nonconsensual vaginal, anal, or oral penetration, obtained by force or by threat of bodily harm or when a person is incapable of giving consent.

it is any type of sexual activity to which the victim does not consent, and it ranges from inappropriate touching to penetration. it can also occur verbally over the phone or online
being forced into activities such as prostitution, posing for pornographic photographs and appearing in pornographic videos are all examples of sexual assault.
