Chapter 27 - Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is the defining characteristic of a eukaryotic cell?
A
They have a nucleus, are limited metabolically compared with prokaryotes
2
Q
What are other basic features of a eukaryotic cell?
A
Cytoskeleton Organelles Mitochondria Chloroplasts Linear chromosomes
3
Q
Why is the cytoskeleton in eukaryotes so central?
A
It provides structure for eukaryotic cells in the form of myosin, actin,, microtubules. It also aids in the transport of organelles. It can change shape, which is something that prokaryotic cells cannot do. It also permits them to engulf particles and expel them.
Prokaryotic cells have cells walls that maintain necessary rigidity but the walls are not dynamic - also, proteins provide some structure but again are not dynamic.
