CHapter 27: Asymmetric Flight Flashcards
1/2 Prop Loss
What direction do you roll in?
For prop AC: wing with engine loss = less lift. Want to turn into live engine wing because it has easier time getting back to level with extra lift
OEI Asymmetry Correction Method Inflight (2)
Wings level
Banking / wings down
Wings level Method
What is? Advantages (3), disadvantages (3)
Correct engine asymmetry with rudder \+: keep natural horizon no rate of turn indicator ball is central -: D increase (already have 1/2 T) fin stall decreased rudder authority
Banking / Wings Down Method
What is? Advantages (3), disadvantages (3)
Roll into live engine < 5° \+: perf+, D- increased rudder authority reduced fin stall -: disorienting attitude indicator can reset -> roll more symmetry ball indicator into live engine
Vx with OEI
How does it change for prop, jet?
Prop: Vx increases
Jet: Vx decreases (more parasite drag)
Critical Engine
dual RHP: left
because right produces more yawing moment
jet: engine into wind (TO only)
because adds yawing moment to sideslip on fin
Minimum Control Speeds (3)
Vmc(a): minimum control (air)
Vmcl: minimum control landing / approach
Vmcg: minimum control ground
Vmc(a)
Parameters used to determine (8)
Calculated at: Max T, aft CG, TO trim, Max SL TOM, critical TO conf (gear up), no ground effect, prop = feathered or most probable position, 5° bank
Vmcl
Parameters used to determine (7)
Calculated at: go around T, critical CG, app trim, unfav. M, critical app conf, props: no pilot action, pick up dropped wing by 20°/5s
Vmcg
Parameters used to determine (6)
Why not use Vmca instead?
Calculated at: Max T, unfav CG pos, TO trim, light/medium M, critical TO conf, 30’ deviation from center line
at TO, rotate around main gear -> smaller moment arm with fin -> less stabilizing
OEI
When to abort and TO
OEI before Vmcg -> abort
OEI between Vmcg and V1 -> abort
OEI after V1 -> TO
Vmcg
What makes it higher (2)
low alt
colder air
higher T -> more yaw
