This is a promise that the Johannine Community will experience complete joy at the age to come if they remain in the true community of faith and if they don’t follow Docetic secessionists.

1: 6-7: Docetists: Claim to have fellowship/ covenant community, John: they “walk in darkness”- have abandoned the covenant community, True believers “walk in light”, have fellowship with God, bc he shed his blood and died, are cleansed by him, and live in covenant community. (Docetists taught that God died on cross not as man- this denied these individuals from the truth of covenant community with God and communing with others.
