Chapter 26 and 27 Flashcards
- Who are the We mentioned several times in 1 John 1-4?
First person plural: John and the eye witnesses of Jesus
- How do the words koinonia and joy relate to each other in 1 John 1:3-4?
Joy and fellowship are the present experience of the eschatological age, the kingdom of God, and abiding in Christ. Fellowship and Joy are rooted in the true understanding of Jesus Christ. This is a promise that the Johannine Community will experience complete joy at the age to come if they remain in the true community of faith and if they don’t follow Docetic secessionists.
- Summarize the three sets of conditional sentences that comprise 1 John 1:5-2:2 relative to John’s opponents and the apostle’s response to them.
1: 6-7,1:8-9,1:10-2:2, two conditional sentences: the first is the opponents claim, the second provides John’s counter claim.
1: 6-7: Docetists: Claim to have fellowship/ covenant community, John: they “walk in darkness”- have abandoned the covenant community, True believers “walk in light”, have fellowship with God, bc he shed his blood and died, are cleansed by him, and live in covenant community. (Docetists taught that God died on cross not as man- this denied these individuals from the truth of covenant community with God and communing with others.
1: 8-9: Secessionists: “we are without sin” and it’s guilt (believed God was not man hence what evil done with the body did not matter), John: they are deceived bc they deny Christ came in flesh. True believers” confess their sins to one another’s, True Johannine churches are based on Christ’s sacrificial death on cross, not one who was whisked away on the cross before suffering
1: 10-2:2 secessionists: “Without sin” (bc their knowledge that God was not fully human), John: “liars” “void of Word/ message of Christ” , (to deny sin is to deny a need for incarnation), True believers: are “Spiritual Children”, and have a Paraclete or advocate who has atoned for their sin.
- Why did the Docetists not have fellowship with the Son, according to 1 John 1:6-7?
they “walk in darkness”- have abandoned the covenant community that believed God was man and died on cross
- Why did John opponents think they had no sin, according to 1 John 1:8-9 and 1:10-2:2?
Believed they were “Without sin” – guilt (believed God was not man hence what evil done with the body did not matter)
- What does John mean by Jesus’s atonement for sin ( 1 John 2:2)? What is the OT background of 1 John 2:2?
Hilasmos- “propitiation” , Day of Atonement- High priest offered a bull or goat for all of Israel. Then poured blood on the mercy seat/ arc of covenant
