How often should VS be checked in newborns?
On admission/brith; every 30 min x 2, every 1 hr x2, and then 8 hours.
What occurs in the first period of reactivity?
The newborn is alert, exhibits exploring activity, sucking sounds, and rapid heart rate and RR. HR may be as high as 160-180, then it stabilizes to 100-120.
What is the period of relative inactivity?
Baby is quiet, and begins to rest and sleep. HR and RR decrease. This period will last 30 min to 2 hours after birth
What is the second period of reactivity?
Newborn reawakens, ,is responsive again, and often gags and chokes on mucus that has accumulated in the mouth. Period occurs 2- 8 hours after birth and may last 10 min to several hours
What’s a newborn’s RR range?
25-60
When using a suctioning bulb on a newborn, what do you aspirate first?
Do the Mouth first, then one nostril and the second nostril
How many bands does the baby have?
Two, one on the wrist, one on the leg
What are 3 signs of hypothermia in the newborn?
Axillary temp
Conduction?
Loss of body heat from direct contact with cooler surface.
Intervention: Warm stethoscope, pad scale before newborn weighing, newborn should be placed on mother’s ab
Convection?
Flow of the heat from body surface to cooler env air.
Intervention: Place bassinet out of direct line of fan, swaddle newborn in blanket, and keep head covered.
Evaporation
Loss of heat as surface liquid is converted to vapor.
Gently rub newborn dry with a warm sterile blanket after delivery. When bathing expose only one body part at the time.
Radiation
Loss of heat from the body surface to a cooler solid surface that is close, but not in direct contat.
Intervention; keep newborn away from windows and air conditioners.
Purpose of Vitamin K for newborns?
Admin to prevent hemorrhagic disorders.
Newborns don’t produce this in the GI gut.
Hypoglycemic S/S in newborns?
Jitteriness, twitching, weak high pitched cry, irregular resp effort, cyanosis, lethargy, eyerolling
