Chapter 24 Flashcards
What are forms of pathogens found in vaccines?
Dead
Parts
Weakened
Inactivated bacterial toxin
What are in vaccines?
Pathogen mixed with an adjuvant
What is an adjuvant?
A chemical substances that promotes the activity of the antigens present on the surface if the pathogen and enhances the immune response
What are key aspects of phase 3 in clinical trials?
Two groups; control and test
Placebo controlled, double blind , randomised
What is herd immunity?
Most of the pop have been immunised the probability of the few remaining non immune ppl getting the disease becomes very low, they are protected
What does an herd immunity threshold depend on?
Pathogens virulence
Vaccines efficacy
Contact parameters
What is antigenic variation?
New strains of a pathogen surface antigens are different from those of their parent strain
What is active immunity?
The protection gained as a result of the persons own body producing its own antibodies
