Chapter 23 Vocab Flashcards
Exam 2
zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)
An assisted reproductive technology in which an ovum fertilized in vitro is placed in a woman’s uterine tube.
preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
Removing a cell from a cleavage stage embryo or blastocyst and testing it for a mutation to deduce the genotype of the embryo
intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
An infertility treatment that injects a sperm cell nucleus into an oocyte, to overcome a low sperm count or many atypically shaped or non-motile sperm.
in vitro fertilization (IVF)
Placing oocytes and sperm in a laboratory dish with appropriate biochemicals so that fertilization occurs, then, after a few cell divisions, transferring the embryo(s) to a woman’s uterus.
infertility
The inability to conceive a child after a year of frequent unprotected intercourse.
assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs)
Procedures that replace a gamete or provide a uterus to help people with infertility have children.
Sequential polar body analysis
Testing the DNA of a second polar body to infer the genotype of its associated fertilized ovum
gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT)
An infertility treatment in which sperm and oocytes are placed in a woman’s uterine tube.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
An infertility treatment that places donor sperm in the cervix or uterus
