Characteristics of Sangiovese
A
- Dry wines with high tannins, high acidity, flavours of red fruit (red cherries, red plums)
- Planted in Chianti, central Tuscany
- Chianti DOCG: simple, inexpensive, not for ageing
- Chianti Classico DOCG: pronounced red-fruit aromas, often matured in oak, adding complex flavours. Denotes often the hilliest parts of a region
- Chianto Classico Riserva DOCG: stricter ageing requirements
- Brunello di Montalcino DOCG: powerful and full-bodied wine. very high levels of tannins and acidity, must mature in oak before release, long ageing potential

A
- Deeply coloured wines with medium acidity
- high tannins, black-fruit flavours
- Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC: high volumes of inexpensive wines
- May be matured for a short time in oak
