Characteristics of Sangiovese

A
  • Dry wines with high tannins, high acidity, flavours of red fruit (red cherries, red plums)
  • Planted in Chianti, central Tuscany
  • Chianti DOCG: simple, inexpensive, not for ageing
  • Chianti Classico DOCG: pronounced red-fruit aromas, often matured in oak, adding complex flavours. Denotes often the hilliest parts of a region
  • Chianto Classico Riserva DOCG: stricter ageing requirements
  • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG: powerful and full-bodied wine. very high levels of tannins and acidity, must mature in oak before release, long ageing potential

  • Deeply coloured wines with medium acidity
  • high tannins, black-fruit flavours
  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC: high volumes of inexpensive wines
