Chapter 23 - Redox And Electrode Potential Flashcards
1
Q
How to complete or write out half equations?
A
1) Assign the oxidation numbers first
2) Balance the electrons
3) Balance all other atoms (such as the oxygens and the hydrogens)
(Add the H20 first to balance the oxygens first)
2
Q
How to know which metal is which electrode
A
The more reactive metal is the one that loses electrons. It is oxidised, and it becomes the negative electrode
3
Q
The more positive the E theta value
A
The greater tendency to gain electrons - so it is reduced
4
Q
How to calculate the E theta of a cell
A
E reduction - E Oxidation
