Chapter 23- Med Administration Flashcards
Pharmacodynamics
Study of biomedical and physiological effects of drugs and study of mechanisms of drug action in living organisms
Pharmacodynamics
Study of biomedical and physiological effects of drugs and study of mechanisms of drug action in living organisms
Define Drug
Any substance that either positively or negatively alters physiological function
Define medication
A drug specifically administered for its therapeutic effect on physiological function
What are Controlled substances
Drug or chemical regulated by the government, such as narcotics
( these drugs are documented when bought )
Define Pharmacokinetics
The study of how medication enters the body, moves through the body, and ultimately leaves the body.
What does ADME stand for in pharmacokinetics
Absorption (how it gets in)
Distribution ( how it moves in the body)
Metabolism (how is it broken down)
Excretion (how does it leave)
Define Pharmacodynamics
The process in which a medication interacts with body’s cells to produce a biological response
What is the therapeutic effect
Is the desired result or action of a medication
What is drug dosage
A dose of medicine refers to a single prescribed amount of drug given at one time (by the physician)
Define Local drug action
Affecting only the area where the drug is placed
Define systemic drug action
Affecting the entire body
What are the two categories of drug action
Local
Systemic
Define drug interaction
One drug alters another drug
Define drug interaction
One drug alters another drug
Define Potentiation
One drug increases the action or effect of another drug
Define Incompatibility
Drugs that do not combine chemically with other drugs
Define Antagonist
Drug that will block the action of another drug.
Unwanted effects of a drug are defined as?
Side effects
Toxic effects are defined as
Side effects that occur when the patient gets a toxic level of a drug
Define Adverse drug reactions
Harmful, unintended reaction to a drug administered at a normal dosage
Define idiosyncratic response
A rare and unpredictable response to a drug.
Define reduced response
The body tolerates the drug
Define Contraindications
conditions under which the drug should not be given
Define interactions
Modifications of the effect of a drug when administered with another drug, food, herbal supplement etc.
Define Drug half life
The time it takes for the amount of drugs active substance to be reduced by half in the body.
Define drug onset of action
The length of time it takes a medication to start to work.
Define Peak Plasma Level
The highest concentration of a drug in the bloodstream after administration
Define Peak Plasma Level
The highest concentration of a drug in the bloodstream after administration
Define drug Trough Level
The lowest concentration point
