Coming Out
The process of maintaining secrets about sexual orientation or gender identity issues can seriously affect relationships with friends and family. The decision to come out is extremely difficult for many individuals, and is often influenced by the overwhelming sense of isolation that they feel. Coming out to parents and friends can lead to rejection, anger, and grief. Coming out is an ongoing process for LGBTQ individuals—each time, they need to determine with whom and when to disclose. Coming out is often more difficult for ethnic minorities, who face the stigma of being “multiple minorities.”
