Chapter 22 Flashcards
urbanization
the creation and growth of urban and suburban areas
urban growth
the rate of increase of urban populations
urban sprawl
the growth of low-density development on the edges of cities and towns
noise pollution
any unwanted, disturbing, or harmful sound that damages, impairs, or interferes with hearing, causes stress, hampers concentration and work efficiency, or causes accidents
land-use planning
the process of regulating the use of land by a central authority.
zoning
parcels of land are designated for certain uses such as residential, commercial, or mixed use
smart growth
encourages more environmentally sustainable development that requires less dependence on cars, controls and directs sprawl, and reduces wasteful resource use
eco-city
a human settlement modeled on the self-sustaining resilient structure and function of natural ecosystems
rapid rail system
a type of passenger rail transport that operates significantly faster than the normal speed of rail traffic.
photochemical smog
a type of smog produced when ultraviolet light from the sun reacts with nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere. It is visible as a brown haze, and is most prominent during the morning and afternoon, especially in densely populated, warm cities
urban indoor farming (vertical farming)
vertical farming is the practice of growing crops in vertically stacked layers.
greenbelt
a way cities can provide open space and control urban growth by surrounding the city with greenbelts, which are open areas used for recreation, sustainable forestry, or other nondestructive uses. urban growth boundary
fecal snow
Particulate fecal depositions that blow through poverty stricken towns aerates the feces, causing it to harden, and later eroding it into the atmosphere where it will later fall like snow
infrastructure
the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.
