Chapter 22-24 Flashcards
Two types of complex vascular plants
Gymnosperms and angiosperms
What do complex vascular plants produce?
Seed
Nonflowering plant, may produce cones
Gymnosperms
Flowering plant
Angiosperms
Long slender leaves, veins run parallel
Monocot (type of angiosperm)
Broad leaves, veins branch out
Dicot (type of angiosperm)
Have tubes that transport food and water
Vascular plants
Transports water
Xylem
Transports food
Phloem
Produce spores rather than seeds, poorly developed xylem and phloem systems, need lots of water
Simple vascular plants
Don’t produce seeds
Non vascular plants
Anchor plant into ground, absorbs water and minerals, some store food
Roots
One main root that grows almost straight down
Tap root
Many thin roots in a dense network
Fibrous
Absorbs water and minerals
Root hairs
Where new cells are produced
Meristem
Support and connect leaves to roots
Stem
Hard stiff, contains wood cells
Woody
Green and flexible, depends on water pressure to stay upright
Herbaceous
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma
Pollination
When pollen from a different plant lands on a plant
Cross pollination
When the pollen of a plant lands on its own stigma
Self-pollination
After pollination the sperm travels down the pollen tube and fertilizes the egg cell
Fertilization
Parts of a seed:
Embryo- developing plant
Stored food
Seed coat- protection
