Chapter 21 Kinesiology Vocab Flashcards
What is a foramen?
An opening through a bone that usually serves as a passage for blood vessels, nerves, or ligaments.
Examples include intervertebral foramen and foramen magnum.
What is a facet?
A small, flattened, shallow depression articulating with another bone.
Examples include costal facet and articular facet.
What is a fossa?
A shallow depression.
Examples include subscapular fossa and iliac fossa.
What is a groove?
A linear depression accommodating another structure.
Examples include intertubercular groove and laminar groove.
What is a notch?
A deep indentation, or a narrow gap, in the bone.
Examples include radial notch and sciatic notch.
What is a sinus?
A cavity or hollow space in a bone.
Examples include frontal sinus and maxillary sinus.
What is a process in bone anatomy?
A prominent projection, or prolongation, extending from a bone.
Examples include styloid process and olecranon process.
Define protuberance in the context of bone anatomy.
A knob-like protrusion from a bone.
An example is the external occipital protuberance.
What is a ramus?
A long, branch-like prolongation of a bone.
Examples include pubic ramus and mandibular ramus.
What characterizes a ridge in bone anatomy?
An elongated projection of a bone.
An example is the supracondylar ridge.
Define spine as it relates to bones.
A sharp, slender projection from a bone.
Examples include scapular spine and iliac spine.
What is a trochanter?
A large, rounded projection found only on the femur.
Examples include greater trochanter and lesser trochanter.
Define tubercle.
A rounded projection from a bone, usually blunt and irregular.
Examples include pubic tubercle and adductor tubercle.
What is a tuberosity?
A large and rounded, or roughened, projection on a bone.
Examples include deltoid tuberosity and ischial tuberosity.
