Chapter 21- Extinction Flashcards
Extinction
The procedure of withholding reinforcers that maintain behavior
Extinction
Withholding attention by calling out instead of raising hand .
put call out behavior on extinction
each call out is ignored , CSR
call out ignore some time
(intermittent) will resist extinction
kid more likely to call out
Call out ignore on a FI or FR less resistant to extinction( Less likely to call out)
Call out ignore on a VI or VR most resistant to extinction( kid more likley to call out
Response Blocking
I prevent the kid from calling out by putting my hand over his mouth
which is to prevent the occurance of the target behavior
Extinction burst
An initial increase in the frequency of the response after the removal of positive, negative, or automatic reinforcement
Initially when I first start to ignor calling , kid is going to call out more frequenly longer duration and louder.
Before behavior drop
Resistance to extinction
Continued responding during the extinction process
Sensory extinction
Behaviors maintained by automatic reinforcement are placed on extinction by ,asking or removing the sensory consequence
Spontaneous recovery
The reappearance of a behavior after it has diminished to its prereinforcement level or stopped entirely
even though the behavor dose NOT produce reinforcement.
Escape extinction
Behaviors maintained by negative reinforcement that no longer produce a removal of the aversive stimulus
Put not reading on extinction by reinforcing reading
Most resistance to Extinction
Will resist extinction
Escape reading maintained behavior by Woody
Mainor Schedule
* Thin schedule goes up
* FR20 FI 15
* VR1 VI4
* Intermittent schedule
Kid come in contact with inappropriate reinforcement more resistant to extinction
more crying , more escape behavior
- behavior maintained on a intermittent schedule
- VR an VI produce more resistance
- thinner the intermitant schedule greater resistance
- Behavior that continues to occure during the EXTinction phase
Think Woody escape maintain behavior or Calling out behavior
Response Blocking
I prevent the kid from calling out by putting my hand over his mouth
which is to prevent the occurance of the target behavior
Least resistant to EXtinction
💚 Behavior maintained on a continous schedule of Rx may diminish more quickly
💚CSR ; FR; FI
💚Dense Schedule
💚Thick goes down
FR1 FI1
❌❌Thin (goes up)
as opposite
FR5 FI7 ❌
Three procedures for Extinction
- Positive Reinforcement ( No Attention)
- Negative Reinforcement (No Escape allowed)
- automatic reinforcement
Escape Extinction
Escape waiting behavior is the (F(x))
Falling on the floor behavior to escape waiting
If I hold the child that is blocking falling to the floor.
Every time I put child back in chair and say wait means I am phyically guiding student to wait.
Escape Extinction
Food refusal
kid turning head to escape eating food, grabbing and pushing spoon away, covering mouth with bib , put hand over mouth
Put food refusal on extinction
No Escape by keeping the spoon infront of kids mouth the whole time until kid finally took a bite, represent food until kid swallowed food. Spit out food is re-presented until kid swallowed.
Extinction behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement
IS NOT ⛔recommened treatment for problem behavior.
Masking or removing the sensory consequence
Example
for instance kid who likes to pull out hair has to wear gloves or hat
Do not use Extinction when
variables affecting Extinctions
- behaviors that continues to occur during Extinction ( A’kie)
- intermittent schedule
