Culture
the whole human behavior including ideas, beliefs, values, ways of relating to others, and language and manners or speaking and work and lifestyle practices
Cultural Competence
a culturally conscious model of care in which a health care professional continually strives to achieve the ability and availability to work effectively within the cultural context of a client
Health Disparity
a particular type of health difference linked closely with social, economic, and or environmental disadvantage
Social Determinants of Health
the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age
Disparities have been linked to what four things
inadequate resources, poor patient-provider communication, lack of culturally competent care, and inadequate access to language services
Intersectionality
a research and policy model used to study the complexities of peoples lives and experiences
the model looks at how being marginalized affects people’s health and access to care
marginalized groups
LGBTQ, veterans, colored people, people with physical or mental challenge, etc
Oppression
a formal and informal system of advantages and disadvantages tied to membership in social groups
World view
Assumptions that develop during childhood and guide how one sees, thinks about, experiences, and interprets the world.
Core Measures
key quality indicators that help health care institutions improve performance, increase accountability, and reduce costs
Cultural awareness
examining yourself and your cultural and professional background and recognizing prejudices, assumptions, biases you have toward other cultures
Cultural Knowledge
what you know about the diverse groups and their values, health beliefs, care practices, disease incidence and prevalence, and how the world views them
Cultural Skill
your ability to culturally assess a patient and collect relevant cultural data about their presenting problem and conduct a culturally based physical assessment
Cultural Encounter
the process of face-to-face cultural interactions with patients from diverse backgrounds. How you learn about another group, how you communicate effectively with another group. It aims to modify health providers existing beliefs and prevent possible stereotyping
Cultural desire
the motivation and commitment to caring and wanting to learn about other cultures to become culturally aware, culturally knowledgeable and culturally skillful and seeking cultural encounters
