Chapter 2.1 cell division Flashcards

1
Q

What doubled in during the cell cycle?

A

Genetic material is doubled during during the cell cycle and it then divides into two identical nuclei in a process ca;;ed mitosis.

Q

What two things does a cell need before it can divide?

A
  • It needs to grow
  • It needs to replicate the DNA to form two copies of each chromosome and increase the number of sub-cellular structures.

Q

What are the 3 stages in the cell cycle?

A
  • Stage 1 - The cell grows bigger; increase their mass, and carry out normal cell activities. They replicate their DNA to form two copies of each chromosome ready for cell division. They also increase the number of sub-cellular structures such as mitochondria, ribosomes and chloroplasts ready for for the cell to divide.
  • Stage 2- Mitosis: in this process one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the dividing cell and the nucleus divides.
  • Stage 3 - this is the stage during which the cytoplasm and the cell membranes also divide to form two identical daughter cells.
