Chapter 21 Capacitance Flashcards
what is a capacitor?
A capacitor is a device used to store charge
and therefore energy
what is a dielectric?
An insulator that is rolled up between the two metal plates in the capacitor that prevents charge form travelling across the gap.
Define the capacitance (C)
The charge, Q, stored per unit potential difference, V, across the two plates.
where C = Q/V
Which direction is electron flow?
Negative to Positive terminal of the power supply.
What happens when a capacitor is connected to a power supply and there is a current.
The plates gain equal and opposite charge as they lose and gain equal number of electrons.
what unit does capacitance have?
Farad, F
Why will charges be equal and opposite?
Due to the conservation of charge.
