Chapter 21 Air Pollution Flashcards
What are Primary Air Pollutants?
Primary air pollutants are pollutants released directly from both mobile sources (such as cars) and stationary sources (such as industrial plants)
What are Secondary Air Pollutants?
They are air pollutants that arise from the mixture of primary air pollutants with one another or with chemicals on the ground, such as ground level ozone.
What is Particulate Matter?
Particulate matter are particles or droplets small enough to remain aloft in the air for long periods of time
Difference between point-source pollution and non-point source pollution?
Point-source pollution is pollution that comes from identifiable and easily trackable sources, like a factory or coal mine. Non-point source pollution is that which comes from dispersed or mobile sources like automobiles or lawn-mowers, pollution that you can’t keep track of,.
What is environmental justice?
The idea that every human has the right to a clean healthy environment
What is environmental racism?
Then fact/notion that minority communities suffer the most from environmental damage even when accounting for socio-economic factors. (but lower income does correlate to more health problems)
What is acid deposition? How does it form?
Acid deposition is formed when pollution from smokestacks- mostly sulphur and nitrogen emissions- react with oxygen and water to form acids that can fall down as acid rain or snow.
Where might people living in affluent healthy nations find the most source of air pollution?
Indoors! This is because so much time is spent indoors that pollutants build up everywhere form carpets to dust or paint- and without any ventilation, they keep building up.
