Employment at will
a doctrine by which employment can be terminated at any time by either the employee or employer. Exceptions include employment contracts and issues involving public policy.
What are some questions an employer should consider before terminating an employee?
was the termination: a violation of public policy; a violation of any policy or procedure outlined in an administrative manual; retaliatory in nature; arbitrary and capricious; a violation of any contract, oral or written; consistent with the reasons for discharge; etc…
Legitimate reasons for terminating an employee.
“for cause” in employment contracts; financial necessity; hostile attitude; improper billing practices; poor work performance; alcoholism; and insubordinate behavior.

the denial of a right that is imputed to a person or that is alleged to belong to him or her.
Unemployment can be denied as a result of:
Profanity; threatening coworkers; theft; poor work attendance; voluntary termination; violation of smoking policy.
