Chapter 20 - Mechanical Waves Flashcards
Transverse Wave
Perpendicular to the direction the wave moves
Longitudinal wave
Vibrations in the same direction as the wave moves
Crest
The high point of a wave
Trough
Low point of a wave
Wavelength
The distance from any point on a wave to the same point on the next cycle of the wave
Frequency
Measure of how often it goes up and down
Amplitude
Maximum amount the wave causes anything to move away from the equilibrium.
Calculating speed
V= f• wavelength
Inverse relationship - frequency - wavelength
Then the frequency goes up wavelength goes down
Inverse relationship - amplitude & energy
More amplitude , greater energy
Refraction
The wave bends as it passes into and through an object
Reflection
Wave bounces and goes in a new direction
Diffraction
Wave bends around an object or through holes in the object
Constructive interference
When waves add up to make a larger amplitude
Wave
Disturbance in matter
