Chapter 20 (Exam 1) Flashcards
Analogous Structure
Structure with similar functions that do not indicate common ancestry. Convergent evolution selecting for similar functions. Ex: Bird vs. bug wings.
Analogy
Animalia
Archaea
Bacteria
Basal Taxon
Binomial Nomenclature
Classification system created by Carolus Linnaeus where the scientific names is the Genus followed by the species name
Branch Point
Place on a phylogenetic tree where lineages diverge.
Clade
A group of organisms based on similar characteristics and common ancestry.
Cladistics
Creating phylogenetic trees by grouping organisms by shared characteristics. Ex: Can’t have a complete reptile clade without birds.
Class
Level of binomial nomenclature preceded by Domain, Kingdom, and Phylum. Ex: Mammalia.
Domain
Most general level of binomial nomenclature. The three domains are Eukarya, Bacteria, and Archaea.
Eukarya
On of the three domains of life that includes multicellular organisms and some unicellular organisms. The cells have a distinct nucleus and variety of specialized organelles confined in a cellular membrane.
Eukaryote
Family
Fungi
Gene Transfer Agent
Genome Fusion
The fusion of two prokaryotic genomes probably through endosymbiosis.
