Chapter 20 Chemical Bonds Vocabulary Flashcards
A compound composed of two elements.
Binary Compound
The force that holds atoms together in a compound.
Chemical Bond
A formula that tells what elements a compound contains and the exact number of the atoms of each element in a unit of that compound.
Chemical Formula
The attraction that forms between atoms when they share electrons.
Covalent Bond
A compound that has water chemically attached to its ions and written into its chemical formula.
Hydrate
An atom that has lost or gained electrons.
Ion
The force of attraction between the opposite charges of ions in an ionic compound.
Ionic Bond
A neutral particle that forms as a result of electron sharing.
Molecule
A molecule in which electrons are shared equally in bonds.
Nonpolar Molecule
Tells you how many electrons an atom has gained, lost, or shared to become stable.
Oxidation Number
A molecule that has a slightly positive end and a slightly negative end although the overall molecule is neutral.
Polar Molecule
A positively or negatively charged, covalently bonded group of atoms.
