Automatic: D - Drive
Use for normal forward driving
Automatic: 1 - First Gear
Use when pulling heavy loads or when going up or down very steep hills
Standard: 1 - First Gear
The lowest gear. Use it from a stopped position to speeds of 10-15 km/h. Use when pulling heavy loads or when going up or down very steep hills.
Automatic: 2 - Second Gear
Same as first gear
Standard: 2 - Second Gear
Use from speeds of 15-30 km/h, for hills and when driving on snow or ice.
Standard: 3 - Third Gear
Use for speeds between 30 - 60 km/h
Standard: 4 - Fourth Gear

Automatic: O - Overdrive
Use at speeds of over 40 km/h to save fuel
Automatic gears in order?
P, R, N, D, 1, 2, O
Standard gears in order?
R, N, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
How to use the parking brake?
Fully apply parking brake when parking and full release it before moving
What else is the parking brake called and why?
The emergency brake, because it can be used to slow the vehicle if the foot brake fails
What are turn signals for?
To notify other road users that you want to change direction or position
When should you use high beams?
On unlit roads at night when there aren’t any vehicles approaching or in front of you
When should you use cruise control?
Only under ideal highway driving conditions.
What does the accelerator do?
Controls the amount of fuel going to the engine
What foot should you use to operate the accelerator?
Right
What foot should you use to operate the brake pedal?
Right
When does an anti-lock braking system activate?
When you press heavily on the brake pedal, for example: during an emergency stop
When should you use a clutch?
In standard transmission, pressing the clutch disconnects the engine from the transmission so you can shift gears
What foot should you use for the clutch?
Left
What is “riding the clutch” and why shouldn’t you do it?
Keeping the pedal pressed down part way while driving, it causes unnecessary wear
How to use the clutch when stopping?
Use the brake first and then depress the clutch just before you stop
How to use the clutch when you begin moving after a stop?
Release the clutch slowly and smoothly to avoid stalling the car
What is an odometer?
Tells you the distance the vehicle has travelled since manufacture
Temperature gauge?
Shows the temperature of the engine coolant and whether the engine is overheating
Tachometer?
Displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute, or RPM
Alternator warning light?
Shows whether the battery is charging
Brake warning light?
Reminds you to release the parking break before moving. If it comes on while using foot brake, it is not working properly
What should properly inflated tires look like?
Flat top, not concave or convex
What 4 things should you do to prepare for winter driving?
Check battery, exhaust system, replace oil and other fluids with winter-grade products, and install snow tires.
