What is Extrajudicial Measures?
A way to do with youth outside of the court system
What are your legal rights when you are arrested ?
- To know why you are being arrested
- To remain silent
- To be represented by a lawyer as soon as possible
- To be presented by a lawyer as soon as possible
- To have a parent:turned adult or a lawyer with him or her if they choose to make a statement to the police
Define jury
Jury is a group of people randomly chosen to decide whether the accused in a a trial is either innocent or guilty
Who are jurors?
The individuals that serve on a jury
What are the eligibility requirements for someone to serve on a jury ?
- Resident of Alberta
- Canadian citizen
- 18 years of age or older
- You can be excused if you have served on a jury within he last 2 years
- Cannot have been convicted of a criminal offence
What is the process of the jury selection?
- Prospective jurors will not know the details of the case until they are selected and the trial begins
- In a criminal trial the prospective juror goes to the front of the courtroom and faces the accused
- At that point , the person either accepted by each of the lawyers or rejected by one of them
What is sequest
To with draw or remove ; separate
How can some people be excused from jury duty ?
People are excused from jury duty only if they can demonstrate that it would cause them undue hardship

- Scale - represents the need to weigh both sides of the case fairly
- Blind - equality of the law (no bias)
- Sword - Swift justice (consequences)
What is the difference between the YCJA and the Young Offenders Act ?
The YCJA has more rules and keeps them in order . Whereas the Young Offenders Act isn’t as efficient
