chapter 2 - whole body Flashcards
anabolism
process of building up large protein from small protein pieces called amino acids. ana- means up, bol means cast, -ism is a process
catabolism
complex nutrients are broken down to simpler substances and energy is released, cata- means down, bol means to cast, and -ism is a process
cell membrane
structure surrounding and protecting the cell, it determines what enters and leaves the cell.
chromosomes
rod shaped structure in the nucleus that contain region of DNA called genes. 23 pairs of chromosomes in every cells except the egg and sperm
cytoplasm
all the material that is outside the nucleus and yet contained within the cell membrane
DNA
chemical found within each chromosome , arranged like a sequence of recipes in code, it directs the activites if the cell.
endoplasmic reticulum
here, large proteins are made from smaller protein pieces (amino acids)
genes
regions of dna within each chromosomes
karyotype
pictures of chromosomes in the nucleus of a cell, they are arranged by size, shape, and number
metabolism
total of the chemical process in a cell, it includes catabolism and anabolism, meta - means change
mitochondria
source of energy for the cell, catabolism occurs here
nucleus
control center of the cell, it contains chromosomes nad directs the activites of the cells
ribosomes
on the endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes arrange amino acids on the er to make protein,
defferentiation
this change in cells as tey mature and specialize
tissues
a group of smililar cells working together to do a specific job
hist/o
tissue, histologoist
epithelial tissue
forms the linings of internal organs
outer surface if the skin covering the body
also lines the exocrine and endocrine glands
responsible for the secretions that the glands produce
all the tissue that ciers the outside of the body and lines the inner surface of inter organs
muscle tissue
voluntary muscle is found in arms and legs and parts of the body where movement is under conscious control
involuntary muscle found in the heart and digestive system , movemtn not under conscious control. cardiac muscle is specialized type of muscle found only in the heart
connective tissue
adipose(fat) tissue
catilage (elastic fibrous tissue attached to bones) bone and blood
nerve tissue
- conducts electrical impulses
organs
types of tissues combine to form an organ
