Cities
Large, important centers of population and business.
compass rose
A map feature that shows the basic or cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) and often, shows those in between, such as southwest and northeast.
continent
The seven large landmasses of the Earth. They are: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
country
An area of land that has boundaries and a government that are shared by all the people living there; a nation.
elevation
The height of land above sea level.
Equator
An imaginary line that goes around the middle of the globe like a belt from East to West.
geography
The study of the earth, including its people, resources, climate, and physical features.
geology
The study of the earth’s layers of soil and rocks.
glacier
Giant sheets of ice formed in mountain valleys or near the North and South poles.
hemisphere
Half a sphere.
Ice Age
A period of time, long ago, when glaciers covered much of the earth’s surface. The last Ice Age was more than 10,000 years ago.
landforms
Features of the earth’s surface, such as hills, valleys, and prairies.
latitude
Lines, or parallels, that run from east to west around the globe.
locate
To find where something is.
longitude
Lines, or meridians, that run from the North Pole to the South Pole on the globe.
