Administrative Law
A category of public law dealing with the relationship between people and government departments, boards, and agencies. Some examples are WorkSafeBC, and agencies dealing with pay for workers injured on the job.
Bylaws
Bylaws are laws that deal with local issues and are passed by municipal governments.
Civil/Private Law
Law that deals with legal relationships between individuals and between individuals and organizations.
Constitutional Law
The top dog in law, it sets out the rules that the government must follow and establishes paramount legal principles/standards. These laws can only be changed by the Amending Formula, otherwise these laws are set in stone.
Contract Law
Branch of Civil Law that provides rules regarding agreements between people and businesses when they purchase/provide goods and services.
Criminal Law
A category of Public Law that establishes rules and punishments for behaviour that injures people, property, and society as a whole.
Distinguishing a Case
A decision by a judge to reject previous decisions and create a new precedent (decision that will be applied for similar cases in the future).
Domestic Law
Law that governs activity within a nation’s border.
International Law
Laws that govern the conduct of independent nations in their relationships with one another. There aren’t any actual laws that nations are obligated to follow, but nations do like to sign treaties that are treated as laws. Still, if a country breaks an agreement made in a treaty, there may be no consequences….
Jurisdiction
The political or legal authority to pass and enforce laws. Also the judicial authority to decide a case.
Procedural Law
Law dealing with the methods of enforcing rights, duties, and responsibilities of Substantive Law.
Property Law
Branch of Civil Law that governs ownership rights in property.
Public Law
Category of Substantive Law that regulates the relationship between the government and its citizens.
Statute Law
Laws passed by elected representatives in Parliament or the legislative assembly. They are above common law but below Constitutional law in terms of power.
Substantive Law
Category of Domestic Law that defines rights, duties, and obligations of citizens and government.
